Just Life

I am happy to report…well…that there’s not much to report!  Life is rocking along.  Work.  School.  Church.  Repeat.

But since I’m trying to do better with my blogging and I’m still so far behind, I thought I’d keep on telling you about my summer.

I think we are heading into July.  Of course we had a big time down in Pegram as is our tradition.  And Steve enjoyed that all of the US celebrated his birthday.  Smile Unfortunately, the actual day was a complete washout so we celebrated on the 20th down in Pegram.  Kylie enjoyed the parade mostly because they throw lots of candy and who doesn’t like candy?

Kylie loved her Uncle Bob!  I think he might like her a little bit too!!

115

It was a super hot day and the littles in the family enjoyed some pool time!

117

Jenna and her friend, Gracie, dressed up for the pageant.  It was rigged Smileand so neither of them placed but they had a really great time dressing up.  How cute are they?!?

We had a great day (or two) celebrating.  It’s one of my favorite times of the year for sure.

Looking Back and Catching Up

I don’t really have anything exciting to talk about that is current today.  I will say, I thought about blogging last night and decided I’d rather read instead and so I did.  And that felt SO good.  I think I had sucked all the enjoyment out of blogging by making it something I felt like I had to do every day!  Now that I haven’t put that pressure on myself, I feel like I enjoy it more because I blog when I want to, not when I feel like I have to.
I think I left off about mid-June…right around Jenna’s birthday.  June is always the month our church does VBS.  For a small-ish size regional campus, our VBS is a HOPPING place that week and the days immediately prior to.  Since we are in a small community, the community really comes out for VBS.
This year, the theme was Colossal Coaster World.  I’m sure many of you right now are humming that catchy tune….yeah, well, that tune was co-written by a fabulous musician in our church named Jeremy Johnson.  He and his wife (who also has a recently released album) have a tremendous testimony that I was honored to watch unfold.  Anyway, because Steve and I both volunteered, Kylie got to attend and of course, this was Jenna’s last year (next time, she’ll have to volunteer!)
077
Yep, she had a t-shirt too and that’s a chocolate pop-tart in her hand!  I had to be there early since I worked registration and so Steve dressed her.  You can’t see it very well, but she had a super-matchy bow.
085
This is the future of the church right there.  Train them up…
083
Because it was her last year, Jenna was able to lead on stage with some fellow 5th graders.  She loved it.  And I loved watching her.  I loved the music and everything about VBS this year.
081
Both of the girls really enjoyed it.  I hope Jenna will be able to enjoy it again next year as a youth volunteer.  I think she will.  She definitely knows how to handle those kiddos!
But she was plum tuckered out after the week was over.  We had a friend of hers spend the week with us so she could attend VBS with her.
082
One afternoon (evening?), we went out to celebrate Jenna’s birthday at a local Mexican restaurant.  YUM!
075
June is always a great month.  Smile

Cleft Lip/Palate Visit

Today was our annual doctor visit with the plastic surgeon who repaired Kylie’s palate more than a year and 1/2 ago.  He was still pleased with her progress.  The little hole he left in her palate for growth reasons is still the same size and we and her speech therapist feel that her speech is progressing fairly well.  She’s about 30-40% intelligible to us and even less so to others.  But that’s a long way from where she was.  We will schedule a visit with him next January and then schedule a nose revision probably in the Spring or early summer of 2015 depending on how quickly she’s growing.  At that time he will take some cartilage from her chest area (I think that’s right) and rebuild her nose from where growth has caused it to collapse.  Once that is done, the next step will be for the orthodontist to do his thing when her permanent teeth begin to come in.  She has all her baby teeth so I’m praying she has all her adult teeth too.  At some point when she is 7 or 8, they will do a bone graft to close that hole and rebuild her gum line. Lord willing those two surgeries will be it unless she opts for another lip/nose revision later.  We are VERY pleased!

Luckily, the bad weather didn’t turn out to be as bad as they were predicting, so we made the appointment.  I was very pleased to have it behind us.  It was bitterly cold though.  Schools are closed tomorrow and that includes Jenna’s school.  Amazingly enough, even Jenna’s school is closed.  But mostly due to the fact they had to cancel their scheduled teacher in-service today and then they found that several classrooms had heaters that weren’t working at all or not working adequately.  When it’s –10 wind-chill, you need those heaters working right!  So they get one more day tomorrow and then they’ll be back at school Wednesday.  Jenna is ready!

OK, so I’m caught up through the month of May.  Summer months are usually crazy busy so I might have to start breaking up these months.

June 1, Steve and I celebrated 17 years of marital bliss (well, most of it was bliss) Smile.  We celebrated our favorite way…a meal at Stoney River.  Jenna watched Kylie for us and boy did we enjoy our couple hours alone.  We LOVE Stoney River.

033

These are Stoney Pups.  I could make an entire meal of them.  I’m not even joking.

034

And this is the heaven that is their Coffee Cured Filet.  Thinking about it right now makes me want one.  It was SO good.  If you ever want to give us a gift, a certificate to Stoney River is a great idea! (because it’s NOT cheap!)  Hear that Stoney River owners and operators?

A few years ago, Jenna and I went to the strawberry patch for her birthday and she really loved it.  We tried a different patch this time and while it was HOT AS THE BLAZES, we took in a great haul!

038

042

We’ve not had a birthday party for our girl in a while…and this year was no different.  We had some friend difficulties and so her actual birthday she spent at home and she opened a few gifts…

055

Pretty sure Kylie enjoyed that part of it. Smile

062

Then, later, we had a sweet friend spend the night.  After the friend drama that ensued prior, this gal was a breath of fresh air to have around.   Incidentally, her mom was one of the Nature’s Classroom chaperones in my cabin so you know she comes from “good people”.

066

The next day, I took the girls swimming.  It was so hot that you couldn’t stay out of the water for long.  We were there just a few hours and then had to come home.

069

That gets us through most of June.  There’s nothing to say about my birthday.  No pics were taken of course because nothing special happened and I’m always behind the camera!  I’ll finish up June next time!

Brrrrr…Icy Sunday!

So today has been interesting.  First, weather predictions had us getting several inches of snow this afternoon and very bitterly cold temps (for this area of the country, that is).  As time passed, they ended up changing the predictions.  What happened is the rain moved in while the temps were still in the 50s.  As it was still raining, the temps dropped quickly and drastically.  Which meant the rain turned into sleet and then a little snow to top it off.  The temps now remain below freezing and are dropping into the single digits overnight so who knows what the roads will be like in the morning.  Luckily, Jenna doesn’t go back to school until Tuesday anyway and Kylie doesn’t start Mother’s Day Out until Wednesday.  Our temps aren’t supposed to get about freezing until mid-day Wednesday.

Kylie is supposed to have her annual follow-up with the plastic surgeon in the morning.  I’m guessing that’s not going to happen.  I’m a little disappointed because I really wanted to know what the timeline for our next surgeries are and how he thinks she is progressing, but I guess we’ll reschedule for the next few months.

Now back to catching up…to warmer days.  This past May was pretty exciting.  Our family celebrated a milestone birthday of my brother in law…

IMG_4612

Then, my friend Jennifer visited again and we were able to cross an item off my bucket list in meeting SCC!

May flew by with the end of school and before we knew it, we were in full summer swing!  More to come on that.  Smile

Winter is here but let’s talk about Spring!

Over the holidays, I sure have enjoyed my fair share of days where I didn’t even get out of my PJs all day.  And while I find those days quite enjoyable, I realized I have a hard time allowing myself to have them.  Like most moms/wives/women, the moment I sit down, I see 100 things that need to be done.  Steve doesn’t understand this t all.  But he has been phenomenal at doing everything he can in order to give me as few excuses possible to NOT sit down and SLOW down.

Today, the only thing on the agenda was my morning hair appointment.  I was there and back by 11:00 so we decided to haul across town to look at new living room furniture.  Taking Kylie furniture shopping was about like taking her car shopping (although we didn’t do that when we bought my car).  After the first stop, we found what we thought we wanted, but we just wanted to price shop, so we left Jenna and Kylie in the truck to go in the next place just to ensure our choice at furniture store 1.  Well.  Wouldn’t you know it we found something we liked better at stop two?  By this time, we were all starving and it was way past lunchtime, so we got all the information and left for some lunch.  After we ate, Steve and Jenna went in one more store and this confirmed out final choice found in store 2.  We ran back there and I went in and placed our order and we headed home.  Steve then took Jenna to a movie for date night and I have enjoyed a night home with Kylie.  She’s in her bed now and I in mine.  I’ve read my Bible reading for the evening and am getting ready to order some photos.

There’s supposedly snow coming our way tomorrow night, so we’ll see.  Kylie has her annual visit with the plastic surgeon at 9 Monday and I betcha if the snow comes, we’ll never get there.  I surely hate to reschedule, but I’m not risking all of us ending up in a ditch either!  It’s at the very least going to be bitter cold (for here) down in the single digits not counting wind chill.

With that said, I thought a little catching up back to the warmer days of spring might be in order.  SmileAs I’m going back, I have to reread my blog to see what I might have posted.  Forgive me if there’s some repetition here.  Back at the first of April, I was chosen to chaperone Jenna’s school trip to Nature’s Classroom.  I’ll be honest, I dreaded it as my idea of a fun time is not with a bunch of 5th grade girls.  However, it turned out not to be so bad despite the chilly, wet weather.

2013-04-03 14.53.51-1

I did realize how stinkin’ out of shape I was.  Mostly because of food like what they served.  You’d think it would be kinda…meh…but it was some GOOD home cookin’!  And it was quite nice to completely unplug and enjoy nature since normally, this family is not much for nature-y kind of stuff.

2013-04-05 09.31.27

The girls in our cabin were fun and my two fellow chaperones were THE BEST!  I missed chaperoning the 6th grade trip but the 3 of us are already planning a 7th grade trip reunion!  I wish I’d gotten a photo of the 3 of us, but it was just too busy.

The best part of the trip was spending time with this girl.

IMG_4205

Spring also brought an afternoon of play with these sweet neighbors (who have since moved away which made us SO sad).  Tell me how cute they are?  We actually met online when we realized we literally lived 2 houses away.  Our neighbors traveled for their youngest, J, just a week or so before I left to pick up Kylie.  In fact, she loaned me her carry on bag.  We sure do miss these sweet faces!

And after lots of Spring Day play, this happens.

004

And then I’ll end with a sweet Sunday morning photo…

Allow Me to Introduce Myself

Yes, it’s been a while.  This has been the longest hiatus I’ve taken from blogging since I started.  In fact, I’ve taken a hiatus from just about everything I used to enjoy.  Call it laziness.  Call it busy-ness.  Call it lack of focus.  Call it “the season I’m in”.  Any way you cut it, I’ve been MIA from many things I enjoy in life.

In addition to not blogging, I haven’t scrapbooked in nearly 2 years.  I quit reading blogs for months.  I quit using my camera.  I quit surfing the net.  I quit Facebooking.  I quit reading.  I quit watching TV.  And if I’m honest, I quit putting much at all into my relationship with God.

There was no specific reason why.  Slowly  but surely those things just went by the wayside.  Oh, I guess you could call “just the season I’m in”…arriving home from work by 6pm (if I’m lucky), play with Kylie, eat dinner, put Kylie to bed…and that leaves about 90 minutes for me to shower and do whatever else I desired.  Most nights I’d play a game on the iPad or read a magazine.  Or many nights, I’d do some Bible study (just because I was filling in the blanks doesn’t mean I was really studying).

A few months ago, I realized how much I’d let go that I enjoyed.  So, now that we are in 2014 and starting with a clean slate, I decided to try harder to incorporate those things I once enjoyed back into my life.  One of those things is blogging.  But I’m blogging now with a different intention.  I started blogging just to document what what going on in my life.  And document I did.  During scrapbooking retreats, I’d have my blog open looking for dates and times of when things happened.  Then we decided to adopt and all of a sudden, I picked up a bunch of new readers and I started blogging every night and really stressing over getting up a new post every day.  And somewhere in all that, blogging became more of a job than something I enjoy.  So I’m going back to blogging as documentation.  And if there are any readers left after my long hiatus, then they can follow along.  Or not.  Either way, I hope to be back.

For a while, it’s going to be a lot of backtracking since it looks like it’s been almost 9 months since I really hit the high points.  I’ll leave you with some of our Easter activities (told you I was backtracking!)

IMG_4154

It was a special day because I was able to get up and attend the early service at our main campus.  I love my church but I sure do miss the full orchestra and choir of the “big house”.  Smile

IMG_4177

And this is the reason why I got up so early…This is my neighbor.  We lived next door to she, her son and husband since we moved into this house over 8 years ago.  We never really knew them and didn’t do more than throw up our hand as we drove by.  Until we brought Kylie home.  See, my neighbor is Chinese.  Her husband is American and at the time was training to be a truck driver so he was away from home for a very long period of time.  She began to visit with her son (who is Jenna’s age) and as we began the relationship, she began to ask questions about God, church and Christianity.  After several months of this, she and her son were saved and both of them were baptized on Easter Sunday by the pastor of our Chinese congregation.

IMG_4184

And there was no way I was going to miss it.  Unfortunately, Steve missed it as he was playing in the worship band at our campus.  I managed to see the baptisms and then make it back to our campus in time to teach my Sunday School class and attend service second hour.

IMG_4198

This was after church…my sweet girls looked so beautiful!  And Steve in his pink shirt!

IMG_4199

Incidentally, Easter Sunday of 2012 was Kylie’s first Sunday at church EVER.  We’d only been home about a week.  She’s been every week since.  She’s grown so much!

Well, that’s it.  Thanks for indulging me a break from blogging.  It’s good to be back!!

A Kylie Update

Since it’s been forever since I blogged I am having a little bit of a hard time figuring out where to start. We had a busy summer, but not because we were so busy, just because life got in the way (does that even make sense?!).  I fear I don’t have a ton of photos to prove we did anything this summer but we will just wait and see what I can come up with.  So since it might take me some time to get myself together, I’ll start with what you all really come here to read anyway, right?  (and don’t worry…and update on Jenna is next!)

Kylie is really doing well.  I’ll admit, at the beginning of the summer, I wasn’t sure Steve was going to survive.  Kylie was going through the things most 2 year olds go through…namely temper tantrums.  She seems to be coming out of that phase now, thank goodness, but you can still hurt her feelings pretty easily and her bottom lip pops out the instant you mention the spanking spoon.

A word about the spanking spoon…we used cheap wooden spoons and we had one in each diaper bag, each vehicle and the house.  We actually used them rarely, but we did use them.  Since Kylie isn’t potty-trained, popping her on the bottom very lightly made a pretty loud pop and she really didn’t like it.  I’m not here to debate whether spanking, time out etc. is right or wrong.  It’s what worked for us.  In fact, I could count on two hands the number of times we actually used it…after about 3 times, all we had to do was bring it out and she would start to straighten up.  The first few times we’d pop her bottom (I highly doubt she even felt it…her feelings were hurt more than anything and the way she cried she was just downright mad) she’d start crying harder and screaming and then we’d put her in time out which really ticked her off.  However, after just a few minutes, she’d decide she was over it and she’d straighten up.  Our biggest and most frequent battle was meal times.  Coming to the table would almost always result in a meltdown.  We pretty much stopped eating out because of her behavior.  But anyway, she seems to be improving on that front.  Thankfully.

In general, Kylie is happy and is quite the ham.

Kylie birthday hat

She talks up a storm.  Unfortunately, she’s probably about 20% intelligible.  She will attempt to repeat almost every word you ask her to.  And there are some words that she says that we can understand.  Milk is one and sounds a lot like “Meeelk” with her sweet, southern drawl.  But so much of the time she babbles off a whole story and I can tell she is trying to tell me something but I have no idea.  Shortly she will start her testing to see if she qualifies for services in the public school system since she ages out of Tennessee Early Intervention on her 3rd birthday at the end of January.

Physically, she is still on the small side, but is making great strides.  She is in about the 25%ile (or less) on both height and weight.  At her 30 month check up, she weighed 26lbs 7 oz and was 36 inches tall.  To give you some perspective, last year at this time, she weighed 22lbs, 4 oz and was about 30 inches tall.  She has shot up like a weed but the weight isn’t keeping up with her, so she’s still in 2T clothes.  She is still somewhat of a picky eater and doesn’t eat much meat, but the doctor isn’t concerned, so we aren’t either.

Kylie had her first dental appointment.  I started paying for her to be on my dental insurance this year so I figured we might as well have her teeth looked at since it’s free.

Kylie dentist

I gotta tell you, I was worried about the visit, but the little sweetie did SO well!  It wasn’t a long visit and Jenna had hers too so Kylie got to see her.  We are happy to report, she has 10 teeth on top and bottom.  The bottom teeth are a little crooked, but all in the right spots.  But because of her cleft, the top is a little bit of a mess.  There are 2 teeth there that appear to be out of the gum line and in the roof of her mouth.  But again, the dentist doesn’t seem too concerned…we just wait and see what happens with her cleft repairs and when the baby teeth fall out and go from there.  Another milestone.

We had took our first vacation this summer since we went to China and I was in desperate need of the beach (lots more to come on this).  We were very concerned that Kylie might not like the beach/waves/sand.  She does love the water though.  I needn’t have worried.

Kylie goggles

This is our last meal at the beach…at a Greek restaurant no less.  This was the way we kept her happy at the table (recall eating out was a challenge at this time and vacation was no exception).  She literally ate her meal just like this.  I kid you not.  Again, the kid is a ham and she really gets going if she knows you are laughing at her.

Finally, Kylie loves her jie jie.  I have never seen a love like these girls have for each other.   Jenna aggravates her just like you would expect and for some reason, it doesn’t bother her to hear her whining or crying because she is the cause of it many times, but when the rubber hits the road, this love runs deep

Kylie loves jie jie

Y’all.  I die.  Jenna prayed so long for a little sister.  I thought the “new” would wear off pretty soon after returning from China, and honestly, there are times where Jenna is selfish and doesn’t want to be bothered, but hey, I’m that way too sometimes.  But in general, I can count on Jenna to take care of and watch Kylie anytime.  And not only does she watch her, but she has the best of time with her.  Having kids who are 10 years apart in age isn’t always easy, but for us, it hasn’t made their relationship any more difficult.  In fact, I think they love each other more because of it.  Several times, Jenna will come in from telling Kylie goodnight (she sneaks in after Kylie is in bed every night because Kylie whispers “jie jie!  Jie Jie!” from the bedroom) holding her heart and with tears in her eyes because she just can’t contain the love.  She told me one night, “I don’t know how you do it.  I just love her SO much!”

Yeah, I know, baby.  I know.

I am…Alive? Back? No longer MIA?

I am Fun

Hi y’all.

Have you missed me?  I have missed you.  At least I think I have.  Smile  I guess you might have noticed that I took an unintended hiatus from blogging.  Not only blog writing, but blog reading too!  It’s been many years since I took that long of an extended break from writing on my blog, but also from reading blogs.

The only thing to blame?  Life.  Work was crazy.  Life was crazy.  Summer was crazy.  It left no time for blogging.  Actually, I guess I had time for it, I just didn’t make it a priority.

So what has been keeping me so busy?  Well, that’s something you’ll find out if you stick around.  It’s nothing earth shattering, but it is just our life.  I plan to start blogging again.  It’s kinda like scrapbooking (which has also been on hiatus for a much longer time than blogging)…once you pick it back up again and do a few pages, you get in the groove and it just gets easier.

Here’s just a tease of what you’ll see more of if you are even still out there…

I’m back but be patient.  It might take me a while to get back in the swing.
